March 8th marks a powerful celebration of women around the world — International Women’s Day (IWD). This day is dedicated to honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while also raising awareness about the challenges they continue to face in various sectors. Here in Mississauga, the contributions of women, are being celebrated through meaningful events and initiatives. From women-owned businesses to community-driven activities, there’s no shortage of ways to commemorate IWD and support the women who continue to inspire, lead, and innovate.
Women-Owned Businesses in Mississauga
Mississauga is home to a diverse array of women entrepreneurs, each making strides in their respective industries. Supporting women-owned businesses not only helps drive local economies but also promotes equality and opportunity for future generations. Here are just a few businesses owned by strong, inspiring women in Mississauga that you can support this International Women’s Day:
- Little Rose Cookie Co: Founder Stephanie Pacheco’s love for baking and customer service started in childhood. Fast forward to 2017 when Little Rose Cookie Co was born as a home business selling custom cookies and became increasingly popular, leading to the opening of Stephanie’s first cookie shop in March 2020 in Streetsville. Stephanie’s shop is an inclusive, warm, and welcoming space for everyone to satisfy their cravings. Celebrate Stephanie and the shop’s 5-year anniversary with a sweet treat from her adorable shop this weekend.
- Chick-fil-A Square One: In 2023 boss woman Mufuti Sanusi became the new owner/operator of the Chick-fil-A located in Square One Shopping Centre. She credits her passion for becoming a small business owner to her mother and grandmother. Leaving her native Nigeria, Mufuti received her undergraduate degree from York University, and pursued her masters degree in the UK, before returning to Canada to support the expansion of the franchise into the country. Be sure to raise a drumstick for Mufuti and all women when you visit this tasty establishment this weekend.
- Butter Bar: Founder Kate Engineer grew up in her family restaurant, with parents who LOVED using butter as the base for their cooking. As Kate began to cook and experiment on her own, she also used butter as a main ingredient, which led to her also experimenting with flavoured butters. Kate wanted others to think about butter differently, and in 2018 Butter Bar was born! Support Kate this IWD and cook something new with a bar of delicious gourmet butter from her shop.
- Orris Labs: New to Mississauga and proudly Canadian and female-owned, Orris Labs is a unique shop offering cologne and perfume making workshops so you can design your own signature scent. Treat yourself or a close female in your life to a scent-sational workshop this weekend.
