GARDENS AND SCENIC SIGHTS
- Kariya Park: One of the most beloved Mississauga traditions is visiting Kariya Park to see the Japanese cherry trees in bloom from late April to early May. Aside from the main attraction, Kariya is filled with picturesque gardens, traditional Japanese architecture, statues, and a pond that’s home to a variety of ducks, koi, turtles, and geese.
- Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens: Gardening and flower enthusiasts looking for the best floral displays of the year will want to plan a visit to Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens during peak bloom between May and June. One of Canada’s largest public rhododendron gardens, the gardens are surrounded by woodlands to better highlight the blooms, which also include azaleas and other seasonal flowers.
- The Riverwood Conservancy: If you’re looking for a little bit of everything, you’ll find both cherry blossoms and rhododendrons among the scenery at Riverwood. With seven unique gardens featuring everything from pollinator-friendly plants to vegetables, there are endless sights to see. The MacEwan Terrace Garden is particularly popular in May when it’s filled with hundreds of tulips, crocuses, and daffodils. Throughout the conservancy, you can also spot Ontario’s official flower, the Trillium, which blooms from Late April to early June.
ANNUAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
- Carassauga: For one exciting weekend every May, Carassauga takes over the city for a celebration of the many diverse people and traditions that make up Mississauga’s cultural tapestry. This year, the festival celebrates its 40th anniversary from May 24 – 25 with 22 cultural pavilions featuring traditional cuisine, shopping and entertainment across multiple venues.
- Bread and Honey Festival: Started in 1973, the Streetsville Founders’ Bread and Honey Festival is one of the area’s longest-running events. This year’s festival will take place from June 6 – 8 at Streetsville Memorial Park and will include the traditional parade, a midway, live entertainment, vendors and of course, free bread and honey.
- Mississauga Marathon: Claiming the title of Biggest Spring Marathon in the GTA, there are four ways to run the Beneva Mississauga Marathon. Participants can choose from a full or half marathon, or the 5k and 10k races.
SPECIAL OCCASIONS
- National Poetry Month: Throughout April, Mississauga celebrates National Poetry Month with a series of poetic events and workshops that spark imagination. Highlights include a poetry slam featuring the community’s young literary talent and a nature-inspired workshop with Poet Laureate Andrea Josic.
- Victoria Day: The May long weekend typically marks the opening of Celebration Square’s wading pool, but that’s not the only entertainment in store in the Square. The Discover Egypt Festival will bring together visitors, vendors and entertainers for a fun, family-friendly weekend event that showcases Egypt’s rich culture.
- Mother’s Day: From antique markets to brunch buffets, Mississauga has lots of ways to spend some quality time together on Mother’s Day. Families with kids will love getting crafty at Sunday Family Fun at Benares Historic House or enjoying a performance of Frozen In Time. Moms looking for a relaxing retreat can enjoy some rejuvenation with a Mississauga spa getaway.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
- Golf: Tee time booking opens for Mississauga’s renowned municipal courses in early Spring. BraeBen, with its rolling hills, will transport you to the Scottish Highlands for a challenging game at its 18-hole championship course or a more laid-back round at its 9-hole course.
