How to Celebrate Black History Month in Mississauga

Black History Month is a chance to celebrate Black excellence and support the local Black community through gatherings, performances, and learning. Here to showcase the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in Mississauga is a mix of fun and reflective ways to get involved throughout February.

Black History Events at the Mississauga Libraries

Mississauga’s libraries love to put on some great community activities, and this Black History Month, there is a lot planned. Join in an hour of African Drumming and Storytelling on February 14, as Churchill Meadows invites you to participate at 11:00 am, while Mississauga Valley invites you at 2:00 pm.

Love to get lost in a good book? Book Club featuring Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson takes place on February 17 at 10:00 am at Port Credit Library. Let’s Talk Black History Month takes place on February 18, at 7:00 pm at Hazel McCallion Central Library.

Enjoy some Midday Melodies: Chamber Music Live with Waleed Abdulhamid as Waleed connects ancient rhythms to the modern world. Choose your show on February 18 at 12:00 pm at Hazel McCallion Central Library or at 3:00 pm at Port Credit Library.

If you’re stuck inside and can’t get out of the house, Author Talks may be the perfect fit for you. February 25 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm features Antonio Michael Downing in this virtual event as he reads from his debut novel, Black Cherokee. Be sure to reserve your spot.  

Looking for more fantastic ways to further expand your knowledge this month? Immerse yourself in the creative works of Black artists, from books to music. Peruse stories that honour the strong Black voices or lose yourself in a curated Black Excellence Playlist with local Black artists.

Culture and Glam at Fuzion Banquet

If you’re looking for a fun, dressed-up event, come to the Fuzion Banquet Hall in Mississauga on Saturday, February 21, at 4:00 pm. This celebration features a market, highlighting Black vendors, a fashion showcase, and an all-around cultural fiesta.

This year’s theme honours Black Brilliance Across Generations from Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries. The dress code is culture and glam, so dress in your best Ankara dress or shirt and trouser set and come on out for a fantastic evening.

Join the Black History Month Block Party at UTM

For a daytime, community-centred experience, join in the fun at the inaugural Black History Month Block Party hosted by Black@UTM on Wednesday, February 25, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The event takes place in the future home of the Centre for Black Excellence and Belonging (CBEB).

This Block party features art, ceremony, storytelling and interactive activities across multiple animated spaces designed to celebrate Black creativity, rest and resistance, and is open to all looking to connect and participate. Be sure to register your interest in going to this interactive event.

Explore the Black History Month Market

Shop from local Black-owned and BIPOC-owned businesses at Square One between February 20 and February 22. Show your support for these artisans and enjoy a live musical performance by steel pan artist Thadel Wilson.

End of Month Excellence

The city will mark the end of Black History Month with a Celebrating Black Excellence Event at Mississauga Civic Centre on Friday, February 27, at 7:00 pm. Join in the celebrations with keynote speakers, musical guests, and an awards ceremony.

Benares Historic House presents Benares After Dark: Women in Black History, an evening tour to show the hidden histories of Black women in Mississauga from early settlement onward. Spots are limited, so get your tickets to this guided tour here.

Close out the month with a bang when you celebrate Black excellence with a Raptors 905 game at Paramount Fine Foods Centre on February 28 at 2:00 pm. The Raptors 905 always put on a great show; come out for another epic night with themed jerseys and a night of Black unity.
