When thinking about Mississauga, the word “historic” is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. As we know it today, Mississauga is a modern, young city that began to flourish in the 80s and 90s. It is defined by its quiet suburban neighbourhoods, around-the-world cultural scene, and of course, Square One Shopping Centre. But there’s more to the city than meets the eye today. Hundreds of years of rich history are sprinkled within its communities, sometimes in plain sight. All it takes is an inquisitive mind plus the help of our museums to discover the stories and places that shaped this great city. Mississauga has several museums to explore, and they make for a wonderful day-activity during any season! If you’re up for a fabulous day of history hunting, great local eats and fun, here’s how to spend a day at the museums.
How to spend a day: The Adamson Estate
The Adamson Estate, located in Lakeview, opened to the public in late 2025 and has since featured three local history exhibits. The estate house itself was built circa 1920, and there are other heritage buildings on the site such as a barn built circa 1870. Adamson Estate overlooks the beautiful waters of Lake Ontario while sitting on 13 acres of land. The grounds are a public park and the Waterfront Trail runs through the property. Its beautiful landscaped gardens along with the magnificent architecture make for a popular lakefront photography spot.
The current exhibit on view is A League of Our Own: Mississauga Sports Exhibition where you can explore the role sport played in connecting our citizens and creating belonging. This exhibit will run until September 6.

How to spend a day: Benares Historic House
Ever wish you could travel back in time? Benares Historic House may be as close as you can get! The house was completed in 1857, though some older parts date back to as early as 1835. Take a guided tour of the beautiful Georgian-style estate featuring original possessions from the family, and discover what life was like in historic Mississauga. Learn about the stories and people that filled the house with excitement, and the Canadian novel series they helped inspire. Four generations of Harris and Sayers families lived in the house and eventually donated it to the Ontario Heritage Foundation. The City of Mississauga opened it to the public as a museum in 1995. Benares is located in Clarkson, one of Mississauga’s first villages.
