DESCRIPTION:Living Arts Centre 24/25 Season Event\n\nIn 1994 in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon\, Thomas Lauderdale was working in local politics when he saw the need for most engaging and inspiring music at political fundraisers. \nDrawing inspiration from music from all over the world–crossing genres of classical\, jazz and old-fashioned pop–and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike\, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for causes such as civil rights\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public broadcasting\, education and parks. One year later\, Lauderdale called China Forbes\, a Harvard classmate who was living in New York City\, and asked her to join Pink Martini. Their first song writing collaboration was “Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)”which became an overnight sensation in France\, was nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards\, and is still the band’s number one song. \nIn 2024 the band is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary!

SUMMARY:Once Upon A Dream
DESCRIPTION:Once Upon a Dream” is a voice and piano concert featuring Anna Wojcik\, soprano\, and Alex Wang\, piano. It will take place on September 7th at 7pm in the Studio Theatre at the Living Arts Centre. The concert will enter the magical world of fairytales with a retelling of classic princess stories. Experience Cinderella\, Sleeping Beauty\, and Snow White through opera arias\, art songs\, piano pieces\, and beloved songs from the Disney films. The concert will feature works by composers including Fauré\, Prokofiev\, Debussy\, and Larsen.  \n\n\n\nAs a duo\, Anna and Alex have been working together since 2017. Among others\, they have performed recitals together to great success at the Polish Consulate in Toronto\, the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite in Queen’s Park\, and the Art Gallery of Mississauga. The program for “Once Upon a Dream ” was inspired by the various repertoire that has stemmed from the original Grimm’s brothers fairy tales. This concert stretches the traditional Art Song recital medium by not only including Art Songs\, but also connecting opera arias\, musical-theatre songs\, and piano pieces\, to highlight their relevancies with an underlying theme that is easy to follow and throughlines the entire program. The program is varied and is a great introduction to classical music for new audience members.  \n\n\n\nThere will be English subtitles displayed for foreign-language pieces. This concert is presented as part of the City of Mississauga’s Love Local Music Program. DESCRIPTION:The CMAOntario Festival & Awards Weekend is taking place May 31-June 2\, 2024 in Mississauga. In addition to the 13th Annual CMAOntario Awards Show\, CMAOntario Festival & Awards Weekend will include Songs & Stories: Songwriters in the Round\, R2i TuneUp Conference\, Street Fair\, Bonfire\, Tailgate Party\, and Sauga Sunday. \nOn Saturday\, June 1 the CMAOntario Festival & Awards Weekend will present Tailgate\, and Bonfire – two free concerts at Celebration Square. Fans can celebrate the anticipation of the CMAOntario Awards with the afternoon Tailgate party featuring entertainment from nominees and fan favourites such as Andrew Hyatt\, Jessie T\, New Moon Junction\, and Emily Clair. The CMAOntario Bonfire will give fans a chance to take in Ontario’s hottest new music and rising stars with evening concert performances by Jason Blaine\, Les Bilinguish Boys\, Karli June\, Mackenzie Leigh Meyer\, Lemon Cash\, and Abby Stewart. \nOn Sunday\, June 2 at Celebration Square\, the City of Mississauga’s music office will present Sauga Sunday. This free\, family-friendly afternoon concert will show why Mississauga was named Canadian “Music City of the Year” with an all-women lineup of the city’s top country talent featuring Elyse Saunders\, Nicole Rayy\, Bree Taylor\, Alessia Cohle\, Kendra Gabrielle and Jade Hilton.
