The Passion of Joan of Arc
June 11, 2022 – 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm
CMSM presents The Passion of Joan of Arc – silent film by Carl Theodore Dreyer with music score curated and performed by pianist Penny Johnson. Featuring compositions by Philip Glass, Ludovico Eunaudi and Max Richter.
“A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she’d spoken to God, Jeanne d’Arc (Renee Falconetti) is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials (Eugene Silvain, Jean d’Yd). Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.”
Canadian pianist, Penny Johnson holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music, as well as Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music. A soloist at concert series around the GTA, she maintains an active YouTube channel devoted to the music of J. S. Bach and is in demand as a coach and adjudicator. As the creator of Piano Stories with Penny, The Great Pianists: Stories, Music & More, and New Adventures in Piano Listening, Penny has a passion for the history of great pianists and maintains a blog devoted to the iconic Canadian pianist, Glenn Gould.
